An analysis of public perception of the energy transition over time, entitled ‘Who is ready to support the German energy transition?’, was recently published in the journal ‘Soziologie und Nachhaltigkeit’ (Sociology and Sustainability) with the participation of ZIRIUS staff. The analysis shows that attitudes towards the energy transition among the German population have remained relatively stable over time (2014-2022) and that, in addition to education and net household income, ecological values (measured using the New Ecological Paradigm scale) are particularly relevant for identifying subgroups with different attitudes towards the energy transition. The article addresses two research gaps: a) the investigation of possible group differences in attitudes towards the energy transition and b) an analysis of the temporal development of attitudes towards the energy transition. These are addressed using longitudinal data from the GESIS Panel and an innovative combination of structural equation modelling (SEM) and machine learning models (SEM trees based on a latent growth curve model, LGCM).
