Professor Burkhard Pedell has been the chair of controlling at the University of Stuttgart since 2005. His research interests include pay regulation, corporate accounting and controlling systems, risk management, performance measurement and internal audit and compliance. His post-doctoral thesis ‘Regulatory Risk and the Cost of Capital: Determinants and Implications for Rate Regulation’ (Berlin, 2006, Springer Verlag) received the Austrian Controller Award. Professor Pedell has received research grants from institutes such as the German Research Foundation, the Fulbright Commission and the University of Sydney. He has been a regular visitor to the Wharton Risk Center at the University of Pennsylvania since 2002. In 2007, he was appointed senior fellow at the Wharton Risk Center. In 2011, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Sydney. He is head of the working group “Regulation” of the Schmalenbach Society and a member of the scientific advisory board at the German Institute for Internal Auditing. Together with Gunther Friedl and Christian Hofmann he is the author of the textbook Kostenrechnung: Eine entscheidungsorientierte Einführung (Munich, 2010, Vahlen Verlag), which was honoured with the prestigious textbook award of the Association of University Professors in Business Administration in 2011.

He completed his doctorate and post-doctorate studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. During his degree in Economics (1990-1995), also at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, he was awarded a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. He also gained international experience through internships in France, the USA and Canada. Previously, he completed training in banking.
